Une huître d'un an produit environ 100.000 larves; une de 2 ans près de 250.000 larves; une de 3 ans entre 700.000 et 800.000 et une huître de plus de 3 ans : un million en moyenne. Le nombre de larves libérées chaque année par un seul banc d'huîtres se chiffre ainsi par milliards (R. Ph. Dollfus). Mais beaucoup, parmi ces jeunes larves nageuses, sont la proie d'animaux planctoniques; un grand nombre d'entre elles sont entraînées au large, sont tuées et ne se fixent pas.

Le réseau Repamo : un outil de surveillance de la santé des mollusques marins élevés et sauvages (acte) ArchiMer

Created in 1992, the Repamo network (REseau de PAthologie des MOllusques – Mollusc Pathology Network) is in charge of the surveillance and monitoring of the marine molluscs health status along the French coast. It has a regulatory mission (European legislation 91/67 and 95/70) as well as a public service activity under the supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries through the DPMA. It aims at preventing the introduction and propagation of pathogenic agents, in particular the noticeable agents, and monitoring the evolution of those already present on the national territory. The most known and certainly the most important contribution of genetics to the oyster indus try is the development of the triploid cupped oyster. Released for the first time in the 1980s, the triploid oyster has triplets of  chromosomes instead of pairs. Currently, triploid oysters are obtained by crossing diploid and tetraploid oysters. These oysters are characterized by a near lack of milt in summer, which makes them generally popular with consumers, and by a faster growth, allowing a shorter production cycle. In parallel, the exploitation of natural resistance in the diversity of French oysters has been considered to improve the health of farmed populations which is a  major challenge for the sustainability of aquaculture farms. Les huîtres des côtes françaises Ostrea edulis et Gryphaea angulata ArchiMer

Les bancs d'huîtres plates Ostrea edulis formaient jadis un cordon ininterrompu sur toutes les côtes de France. Quelques chiffres donneront une idée des quantités d'huîtres pêchées jadis sur les côtes françaises. A la fin du XVIII ème siècle et au début du XIV ème, les pêcheurs enlevaient des seuls bancs de Cancale et Granville au minimum cent millions d'huîtres par ans; leurs bateaux pêchaient du 1er Septembre au 1er Avril sans discontinuer. La destruction du naissain et des petites huîtres par les dragues très lourdes que l'on employait alors était plus grand encore. L'exportation, de 1772 à 1775, atteignit le chiffre de 293 millions. En 1775, notamment, 234 bateaux normands et 104 anglias emportaient de la baie de Cancale 95 millions d'huîtres.

La conchyliculture basée sur les activités de pêche et d'élevage dans le milieu naturel s'est considérablement développée au cours de ces dernières années, notamment grâce à la production de naissain dans les écloseries et les nurseries, L'accroissement des demandes des échanges de produits, facilité par les moyens modernes de transport, a provoqué une augmentation des risques de propagation de maladies. En s'appuyant sur des exemples, une analyse est faite sur les risques encourus liés aux pratiques conchylicoles et à l'état actuel des connaissances scientifiques. Shellfish farms show a number of specificities, some of which are decisive in the triggering and spreading of infectious and non-infectious diseases. This chapter deals only with infectious diseases which are currently the major hazard in shellfish culture, due to their virulence but also to the insufficiency of available fighting means. The epidemiological analysis is essentially based on the example of French shellfish culture. But the conclusions that can be drawn are of general interest. We then tackle the therapeutic and prophylactic fighting means. Shellfish farming has evolved from a harvesting business to a sedentary farming business. This evolution was done in stages, the main ones being management of natural sites, farming and maturing juveniles and adults. The different stages can moreover still be observed in several countries.... Among the research to be developed, pathology may be crucial for maintenance and growth of shellfish farming.
